A Galentine's Day Celebration

On Saturday February 13th, I co-hosted a Galentine's Day Brunch in NYC. It was part of a multi-city celebration from a virtual connection circle that I am a part of. The connection circle is an amazing group of women from all walks of life that share, connect, and inspire greatness. The creation of the group was inspired by the reciprocity ring concept. Thanks to Amma Marfo for getting the group started and keeping us inspired.

I had never watched "Parks and Recreation" but have been a fan of Amy Poehler since Saturday Night Live. Galentine's Day, February 13th, is a day for "ladies celebrating ladies" that was introduced by Amy Poehler's character Leslie Knope.

In putting together the gift bags for the Galentine's Day brunch, I wanted things that would inspire and put a smile on their face. My co-host Rosann Santos, founder of Latinas In Higher Education, made sure we stayed on track. This is what we came up with:

Sample of the goodies in the gift bags

  • Nail file - women need grit to survive in today's world.
  • Maze - there may not always be a roadmap on the journey of life, but with balance (work/life/love), you can safely navigate it.
  • Kaleidoscope - a slight turn of things can change your perspective on the world
  • Notebook & pen - if you can name it, you can claim it. We are the author's of our own autobiography.
  • Portable charger - you need to have multiple ways to stay charged up for the rigors of life. For me that includes exercise (Zumba) and karaoke (a power ballad can fix any problem).
  • Friendship bracelet kit - friendships don't come pre-assembled. It takes work to build and maintain them.

Cheers to all the ladies doing great things!

Buzzfeed has a list of "23 Reasons You Need To Celebrate Galentine's Day This Year." I agree with #6: friendships are everything. My friendships with amazing women have helped me through times of sorrow, times of confusion, and times of joy. What types of friendship and support do you have in your life?

Do you have a mentor?  Someone who can offer professional advice and guidance.

Do you have a role model? Someone with a job that you can see yourself doing one day.

Do you have a sponsor? Someone who advocates for you when you don't have a seat at that table.

Thank you to the fabulous ladies in attendance. To close the brunch, we wrote thank you notes to women in our lives that we wanted to celebrate. What women in your life do you want to celebrate?
